Samadhi? Nirvana? Enlightenment?
In addition to waking, dreaming, and sleeping states of consciousness, brain scientists are now accurately measuring a distinct fourth state of consciousness, perhaps, identifying what ancient cultures described as Samadhi or Nirvana.
Findings by renowned brain researcher, Dr. Alarik Arenander, show unusually high brain wave coherence simultaneously with a state of deep rest, indicating a unique state of consciousness.
This fourth state of consciousness which they call Transcendental Consciousness, can be experienced through the practiced of Transcendental Meditation.
Scientists first recognized the possibility of a fourth state of consciousness over 30 years ago when they saw dramatic reductions in skin resistance, and heart rate, during the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
In the last three decades, scientists noticed that during Transcendental Meditation practitioners brain waves where significantly more coherent across the entire brain, especially in the prefrontal cortex. This increased brain wave coherence is now measured though a process called brain mapping that uses multiple electroencephaolgraphic (EEG) amplifiers to more accurately measure and understand brain wave patterns during different states of consciousness.
The Significance of Increased Brain Coherence
Research shows that experiencing this fourth state of consciousness permanently improves the way the brain functions. This corrisponds to the forty years of scientific evidence that clearly links the practice of Transcendental Meditation with improvements in mind-body health, including increased intelligence (IQ), longevity, and happiness.
Dr. Arenander has conducted pioneering research at University of California at Los Angeles, Penn State University at Hershey, University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, IA.
